As a Pregnancy photographer in Charlotte NC, I completely understand that having maternity photos done seems like the ideal way to capture your pregnancy… until you realize how little energy you have to prepare for the session. It’s stressful to plan a wardrobe, find something that fits, and dress your husband and children, all of the trips to the store for the inevitable returns.

Does this sound like your nightmare?

If you’re a busy expectant woman, the secret to a stress-free maternity session is to find a photographer who will take care of your styling! For their session, my clients have access to a client wardrobe stocked with the most stunning, timeless gowns. In addition, I will send you a style board designed just for your family! I will include images of options plus links to the clothes that I suggest. Let me take the stress off of your hands!

Now here are just a few tips that will help create the maternity photos of your dreams!

STYLING TIPS FOR THE EXPECTING MOTHER!

There is no such thing as too dressed up!

Say YES to the dress! Skirts and dresses look most stunning because they really flatter every female body–especially on camera. Is there a hat sitting in your closet that you have been dying to wear, well go for it. I promise you that you will never regret getting dressed up for your images! Long, full-length, flowy dresses and skirts look amazing on camera because they bring extra movement to the photos. Keep in mind you will be sitting some for your photos. That is why I usually suggest longer skirts and dresses plus they highlight the bump so beautifully.

Selecting your colors!

Softer, pastel colors tend to photograph better than bright colors – especially since bright colors could reflect on your skin. I love bright, neon dresses, but I don’t love the neon reflection they add to your complexion. The camera loves shades of soft pink and muted blues. Mix those colors with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, leather brown, chambray, and white. That softer color palette fits beautifully into almost all natural outdoor environments. If you’re someone who likes a little more contrast, some of our favorite deeper colors are charcoal grey, darker dusty pink/mauve, and olive green.

Flattering your features!

No matter what her shape is, every woman has an area of her body that she is self-conscious about, so identifying that area in advance is important. Off-the-shoulder or long sleeve dresses have a slimming effect on all arms, while strapless, sleeveless, or spaghetti strap dresses have the opposite effect. Heels can elongate women’s legs, making them look fabulous. Although, we also LOVE the look of barefoot mommas & kiddos!  If your toes are showing,  you might want to schedule a pedicure.

Hair and makeup!

Professional hair & makeup is typically at the top of my clients’ checklists because it looks amazing on camera and takes away much of the stress of getting ready on your own. This is the time to treat yourself! Professional hair and makeup will last longer and give you that extra boost of confidence in front of the camera. It also tends to hold up better for humidity, heat, and wind. Bonus tip: Always say YES to false lashes!
