If you’re expecting a baby in Charlotte and you’ve booked your Charlotte newborn photo session, you may be wondering what actually happens once your baby arrives. What does the day look like? Will the baby cry the whole time? What if you need to feed her halfway through? What are you supposed to be doing?
Take a deep breath, mama. As a Charlotte newborn photographer, I can tell you that newborn sessions are one of the calmest, slowest, most baby-led experiences you’ll have in those early weeks. There’s no script and no rush — just gentle moments, baby snuggles, and time built around your family.
Here’s exactly what to expect at your Charlotte newborn photo session, from the moment I arrive to the moment we wrap up.
Before Your Charlotte Newborn Photo Session: The Pre-Session Planning Call
A few weeks before your due date, we’ll hop on a quick planning call. This is where we talk through everything — where you envision the session, the vibe you’re hoping for, your home setup if we’re shooting in-home, your wardrobe (or whether you’d like to use my client closet), and any specific moments or family members you want included.
By the time your baby arrives, every detail is already mapped out. You don’t have to make a single decision in the fog of those early newborn days.
When to Schedule Your Newborn Session
Most newborn sessions in Charlotte happen within the first 7–14 days after baby arrives, though I can accommodate sessions up to 8 weeks postpartum. Once your baby is born, you’ll send me a quick text or email, and we’ll lock in your final date based on what feels right for you.

The Morning of Your Newborn Session
Newborn sessions begin at 10:00 a.m. — a gentle start time that gives you space to feed baby, take your time getting ready, and not rush. If we’re shooting in-home, I’ll arrive around 9:30 a.m. to set up. If we’re meeting at my Charlotte studio, you’ll arrive at 10:00 with baby already fed and (hopefully) sleepy.
Here’s what I’ll have ready for you:
- All wardrobe options for mom and siblings (from my client closet)
- Headbands, wraps, bonnets, and outfits for baby
- Soft lighting and posing setup
- Backdrops, blankets, and props
- A calm, warm room temperature so baby stays cozy
What to Expect in the First Hour of Your Charlotte Newborn Photo Session
The first part of the session is all about getting baby comfortable and giving you space to settle in. We’ll often start with feeding — yes, even if you just fed her. A full belly is a sleepy baby, and a sleepy baby is the sweetest subject.
While baby feeds and snuggles, we’ll chat. I’ll show you the wardrobe options, talk through any questions, and let your home (or my studio) feel familiar. There’s no rush. The session moves at baby’s pace, not the clock’s.
The Middle of the Session: Capturing the Moments
Once baby is settled, we’ll start gently working through the moments that matter most:
Baby Solo Portraits
Tiny details — the curl of her fingers, the curve of her ear, those long lashes. These are the photographs you’ll come back to again and again.
Mama and Baby
This is the part of the session I care about most. So many moms are behind the camera or doing the heavy lifting — they’re rarely in front of the lens themselves. During your session, you’ll be photographed holding, snuggling, and being with your baby.

Family Portraits
Dad, siblings, and the whole family together. These are the portraits that will live above your fireplace, in your album, on your gallery wall.
Sibling Moments
If you have older children, we’ll capture them with the new baby — the way they look at her, hold her, study her tiny fingers.
Feeding Breaks, Diaper Changes, and Real-Life Pauses
Newborn sessions are baby-led, which means we pause whenever baby needs us to. There’s no pressure to power through. Some of my favorite candid moments happen during feeding breaks.
How Long Does a Charlotte Newborn Photo Session Take?
Plan for 2–3 hours, though some sessions wrap up in 90 minutes if baby is especially cooperative, and some stretch toward 3.5 hours if she needs more breaks. Either way, you don’t have to keep an eye on the clock.
After the Session: What Happens Next
Once we wrap, you don’t have to think about anything photography-related for a few weeks. I take care of everything from here — culling, editing, and curating the gallery.
About 2–3 weeks later, your gallery will be ready, and we’ll meet again for a Design and Ordering Appointment. This is where we’ll design the artwork your family will live with — albums, framed prints, gallery walls.
