Charlotte is full of beautiful places to be photographed, which is wonderful and also a little overwhelming when you are trying to pick just one. Tree-lined streets, blooming gardens, leafy parks, golden open fields, each spot brings its own feeling to your images. So as a Charlotte family photographer, one of the first things we do together is choose a location that matches the look you are dreaming of and the personalities of the people in front of my lens.

To help you start picturing it, here are some of my favorite places for family photos in and around Charlotte, along with what makes each one special and a few honest notes on timing, light, and what to wear.

Myers Park

If you want timeless, elegant, quintessentially Charlotte family photos, it is hard to beat Myers Park. The neighborhood’s signature canopy of towering willow oaks creates soft, dappled light and a romantic, storybook backdrop in every season. In spring the dogwoods and azaleas bloom, while in fall the streets glow golden. It is especially lovely for families who want a classic, refined feeling to their portraits.

Because Myers Park is residential, we will choose quiet stretches and time our session for early morning or the hour before sunset, when the light is gentlest and foot traffic is low.

Freedom Park

Freedom Park is a Charlotte family-photo favorite for good reason. It offers wonderful variety within a single, easy-to-navigate space: a picturesque lake, arched bridges, open lawns, mature trees, and pretty pathways. Because that range lets us create several different looks without ever moving the car, it is a gift when you are wrangling little ones.

It is a popular park, however, so we will plan for early morning light when it is calm and uncrowded. The payoff is a relaxed, joyful session with plenty of room for kids to run and be themselves.

The SouthPark area and nearby gardens

As a Charlotte family photographer, I love that families in and around SouthPark have lovely manicured greens, garden spaces, and tucked-away natural pockets that photograph beautifully. These spots tend to feel refined and well kept, so they are perfect if your style leans modern and clean. They also pair nicely with the SouthPark lifestyle, close to home and easy to reach without a long drive.

Open fields and golden-hour outdoor sessions

If your heart is set on that dreamy, sun-drenched, wildflower-and-tall-grass look, then the open fields and meadows around the greater Charlotte area, including spots toward Waxhaw and the surrounding countryside, are pure magic at golden hour. The light goes warm and glowing, kids have endless space to play, and the resulting images feel airy and free. This is a beautiful choice for families who want something natural, romantic, and a little whimsical.

Your own home

Never underestimate the most meaningful location of all: your home. An in-home lifestyle session captures your family exactly as you are right now, the morning light in the kitchen, snuggles on the bed, your child’s actual bedroom. Years from now, these are the images that will transport you straight back to this season of life. Homes are also wonderfully practical for families with newborns or very young children, since naps, feedings, and comforts are all within reach. If you would rather not be at home, my studio offers a calm, styled space as another beautiful indoor option.

How your Charlotte family photographer helps you choose the right spot

With so many beautiful options, here is how I help families decide. First, we think about the feeling you want: classic and elegant, natural and free, or intimate and personal. Then we consider the ages of your children, because busy toddlers do best somewhere with room to roam and an easy escape if a meltdown strikes. Finally, we factor in the season, since the same park looks completely different in April blooms versus October gold.

Whatever we choose, we will schedule for the soft light of early morning or the hour before sunset, when Charlotte’s harsh midday glare gives way to that warm, flattering glow that makes everyone look their best. If you would like to see recent sessions, you can follow along on Instagram any time.

A quick word on what to wear

Location and wardrobe go hand in hand, and your Charlotte family photographer can guide both. As a rule, coordinate rather than match, choosing two or three complementary colors in soft, neutral, or earthy tones that suit your setting. Blush, cream, sage, denim, and warm browns photograph beautifully against Charlotte’s greenery. Of course, avoid logos, bright neons, and busy patterns that pull attention from your faces. And dress for the season so everyone stays comfortable, because a cold or overheated child is tough to photograph no matter how pretty the spot.
