Tips from a Mom of 3 (and Newborn Photographer) on what to pack in your hospital bag.
There’s something about packing your hospital bag that makes it all feel real.
But when is the right time to pack it — and what happens if you wait too long?
As a mom of three and a newborn photographer who’s seen a lot of babies come early, here’s what I recommend to all the expecting mamas I work with: start early, pack smart, and don’t overthink it.
When to Pack Your Hospital Bag
Most mamas aim to have their hospital bag packed by 36–37 weeks. But if you’re a planner (or just feeling the nesting kick early), you can absolutely start around 32–34 weeks and gradually build your bag from there.
Here’s a general timeline:
32 Weeks: Start gathering your items and making a list
34 Weeks: Begin packing anything you don’t need day to day
36–37 Weeks: Your bag should be fully packed and ready to go
38 Weeks+: Keep it near the door or in your car if you’re often out and about

What to Pack Last-Minute
Some things you’ll need right up until go-time. Keep a note on your bag or phone with these “don’t forget” items:
Phone + charger ( Long Cord)
Wallet + ID
Insurance card
Medications
Glasses or contacts
Favorite snacks or drinks
Mom tip: You might be surprised how many people forget their phone charger in the rush out the door — make it one of the first things you grab!

From a Photographer’s Lens…
If you’re planning to take any sweet hospital or Fresh 48 photos, toss in a neutral baby swaddle and a simple onesie or footed sleeper — it helps keep the focus on your baby’s tiny features (not loud patterns or logos).
Want to take beautiful, natural photos of your baby right at home? I created a simple, step-by-step newborn photo course for mamas just like you. You don’t need a fancy camera — just your phone and a little guidance.
